After a successful class on creative non-fiction, one which I devoted to "personal narrative" essays, I now find myself searching for assignments. I don't necessarily mean "stories," as in "tell the story of your high school experience," but open ended ideas together with constraints on craft. My teacher devised some very good ones, e.g.: "Introduce yourself in/using a specific place. Work on physical description, sensory detail, history -- teach us something if possible about the local, big or small. Tell a story or anecdote." That assignment, very early in the class, led to the best work I produced there. Right now, I need some inspiration. I haven't written anything in a couple of weeks, and I have to get myself back on track somehow.

How about something that took place on the subway? You and I both spent a lot of time down there in our travels to and from school and around NYC and I bet you have some interesting memories and stories from the subway. I think it's a neat subject because most people don't know from the subways and may be curious about the underside of NYC and for others, the stories would resonate with their own experiences.
