Friends and relations have been pinging me to make sure Beth and I are not in danger from the wildfires. The answer is that the fires are way across town from us; the air is thick with fresh smoke, but we're well out of danger. Several friends of mine, such as
burritomama, have evacuated themselves.
The Laguna fire of 1993 was a much closer call for us; fire was on the ridge just a few hundred yards from the apartment building we lived in at the time. We were set to make a dash for Riverside, but firefighters drove the fire back.
I must say that as terrible as the damage to people's homes is, one can't help but put some of the blame on irresponsible developers who built right out to the tinderbox foothills, and the city planning agencies that let them.
