Well, there are two stages: Not Seeing It Coming and Seeing It Coming. For fifteen years, I did Not See It Coming. I wrote an oversized check every month to Sallie Mae, and thought no more about it; it was just part of the overhead, like rent. Then, this year, I Saw It Coming. I saw my balance drop below $1500 and on down from there. I knew I was nearly done when Sallie Mae sent me a special coupon for the last check. When I got the message yesterday from Sallie Mae that I had paid off the loan, I didn't know what to think. Then, a quiet happiness stole over me. And then, I started thinking about what bills I would have to pay with the newly freed-up money. It's all going to credit cards, now. Dejection.
