I have had Outlook crap out on me three times today, and every time I get this little box which says "Report this to Microsoft?" I hit yes. But where do these messages go? It's likely a situation analogous to what I get when I write to my elected officials. Microsoft probably aggregates these messages into a huge database, and categories rise to the top once they've accumulated a few million messages. "Hmm, perhaps we ought to work on the "freezes when window loses focus" thing -- it's got 9,332,478 votes!" They don't realize that every one of those messages is a SCATHING INDICTMENT OF THEIR ENTIRE DEVELOPMENT AND Q/A PROCESS.

Yes, I know. Use Thunderbird. Well, Thunderbird has a little secret. It doesn't work so hot once you reach 7,000 messages. That's because it uses the same indexing scheme for small mailbox files as for large ones. For large ones, it ought to work off the Google Desktop indexes.

Uh um

I throw old e-mail into separate folders based on year and month to cut down on the size of my inbox.

Sure. grep -i "i like bananas" Mail/*2007 does a pretty good job of it.

There are Unix-like environments for Windows, such as cygwin and Interix. And, of course, OS X is Unix under the cover.

?... I have at least 20,000 messages in my Thunderbird inbox, and it still works as advertised. What bad thing(s) does yours do?
