Today is my birthday

Today is going to be different from other birthdays of late. Those birthdays were times to castigate myself, to point out how little I had achieved and how far I was from the path for which I was originally destined. Today, though, I have no great plans standing over me, in the words of Maurice Blanchot, like gowned judges. I am doing what I can day by day, and if in the end I come up short, I will deal with it then. Today will be a day of peace.
