The best Mahler recording ever is almost completely unavailable. It's a live recording of Mahler's 6th made in 1995 at the Mahler Festival in Amsterdam. The fourth movement has to be heard to be believed -- it's not only impeccable, but it is madly exciting. When I heard it on the radio, I wanted to give it an ovation -- and I must say that I am a long-time opponent of ovations at concerts because they are given so freely.

However, I have just discovered the second best Mahler recording ever, and it's very much available. It's the Chicago Symphony's brand new recording of the Mahler 3rd, on their own label. Bernard Haitink, who did the 1995 performance of the 6th, proves that he can nail it again. It beats both Bernsteins handily -- well, beating the 60's Bernstein is not so hard, because of Martha Lipton and the questionable recording quality, but, nevertheless... Go out and get the damned thing! It'll be a nice change from Ministry and Sleater-Kinney.
