We use community-supported agriculture and farmers' markets for our produce, so I haven't had to go inside an honest-to-god supermarket for at least a year. Today, I was forced to. The produce looked wan and disheveled. Much of it wasn't labeled. The cilantro was hidden and crushed under bags of lettuce. The jicama was wedged between the top of the top shelf and the top ledge of the refrigeration unit. I paid $1.39 for a yellow pepper, and about the same for a medium-sized red onion. They'd gotten rid of half the checkers and replaced them with scanning machines; scanning machines, of course, are not great joiners of unions, and require no health care. I paid $5.13, and felt totally ripped off. Damned if I'm going to go there again.
