Data Recovery is a B****
Mar. 26th, 2006 01:55 pmI'm now in the course of spending the second of two sweaty, miserable, fruitless days performing data recovery on my dead computer. Naturally, my last removable-media backup was back in October. I have two drives from which I can get my data back. The first one is an IDE drive which was partially damaged by my erstwhile system's controller. I can mount the filesystem (NTFS) and traverse the directories, but I cannot access the files belonging to me (my SID) specifically -- ostensibly due to a permissions problem, which is ridiculous, since I took ownership of the files. The second drive is an Ultra SCSI 160 drive which I unplugged when the controller started to get wonky. If I can get access to it, I have a full, current backup of my files on it. The problem is that no one I know has a spare PCI Ultra 160 controller. If I had one, I could attach the drive to a borrowed system and start transferring.
Anyone with a spare PCI U160 controller out there, e.g., Adaptec 19160, that he/she could lend me? If not, I'll have to spend vast sums on a data recovery expert, which I would rue greatly.
