Doomsday scenario
Jul. 22nd, 2009 06:31 pmI try not to read the news these days, but somehow the bad stuff finds its way to me. The California "budget deal" would mean that the University of California loses about $2 billion dollars next year on top of the nearly $1 billion it just finished cutting. If this isn't another disgusting piece of brinksmanship by our odious legislators, it could mean a bad end for Beth and me. I'm not being melodramatic. Without Beth's job and health insurance, we're lost.
We just finished getting used to the furlough/pay cut situation, but it was going to be livable. This is so much worse as to be inconceivable. If it comes to pass, the Regents are going to have to shut down whole campuses, and they won't shut down Berkeley or UCLA. Merced is an obvious choice, but after that, no one is safe.
