Minneapolis
Nov. 2nd, 2006 08:46 amBeth and I have just returned from a six-day trip to visit my brother and sister-in-law,
mcohenmn and
queenofstuff, in Minneapolis. Matt and Erin spared no effort or expense to make our visit comfortable and happy. In keeping with his seekrit plan to have us move to the Twin Cities, Matt gave us a multi-day tour of all the relevant MSP neighborhoods and their housing stock. In many ways, MSP has so much more integrity than Irvine; there's not so much consumerism and more of an ongoing intellectual and cultural life. Of course, there is the cold, but I held up pretty well, thanks to my long underwear.
We saw some great people while we were there, in addition to Matt and Erin.
mrbalihai and his wife Joyce drove in all the way from western Wisconsin to meet up with us at Psycho Suzi's, a dive/tiki bar in northern Minneapolis. It was wonderful to see
mrbalihai in his element, ordering tiki drinks and discoursing on the decorations. The body-art-laden waitresses brought many Minnesotan delicacies, including fried cheese curds and Tater Tots. Finally, we met the amazing spinning
msfledermaus, whose kindness and generosity were immediately apparent. She works as a guard at one of Minneapolis's finest art museums, but she took one of her precious days off to show us around the museum anyway. She's just terrific.
Moving to Minneapolis would entail a great deal of luck, especially in finding jobs. Nonetheless, we certainly have sufficient inducement to do so.
UPDATE:
How could I forget our hosts' cats, Smacky and Bun-Bun! Once they realized that we might be possible food sources, they were remarkably affectionate; when they realized that we weren't, their affections decreased markedly. Nonetheless, they injected a happy element of chaos into our stay.
