Today, Beth showed me her Stuart Weitzman catalog. I caviled at a disturbing picture. The image's caption said "Black alligator calf clutch." I thought to myself, "Is the black alligator endangered? How could they slaughter its calf to make this clutch?" The purse was very long, perhaps even the length of a baby black alligator with its head and tail removed.

I must have been dizzy from too much editing. The logical explanation was that the purse was of calf's leather, dyed black, and imprinted with an "alligator" pattern. Of course, then I was left with the question of why slaughtering a calf for its leather was somehow preferable to slaughtering the calf of a rare (possibly endangered) alligator. There are answers, of course.
