My system was laid low yesterday by a bad RAID controller (bad! bad!) and a dubious motherboard. It's no wonder that Dell has to have such good technical support, because their stuff breaks so often. I had a good, American technician, who basically had me disassemble the whole machine and put it back together again over the course of three hours. My cell phone eventually died, but someone's coming out on Tuesday or Wednesday to fix everything. So far, I've had one other major problem with this system -- a bad Xeon -- but at least that was Intel's fault.

If I were doing this over again, I wonder who would be able to supply me with a better machine with this quality of service contract?

Apple has a history of saying, "Problem? What problem?" Whether it's the high pitched whining or trackpad issues, it has been up to consumers to come up with clever / kludgey solutions. Though I'm fond of origami (http://ibloggedthis.com/2006/06/29/an-origami-solution-to-the-apple-macbook-trackpad-squishy-button-problem/), I'm not that fond of it!
