I just had the poor sense to read the letters section of my copy of the Yale Alumni Magazine, in which four or five antediluvian alumni were cackling exultantly over the recent death of William Sloane Coffin. William Sloane Coffin, in his day, spoke out from his pulpit at Yale against the Vietnam War and for more humane race relations. He, along with Kingman Brewster, was in my view responsible for turning Yale into a place that I could attend with dignity. The old alumni were speculating that it was his lèse majesté towards George W. Bush after Bush's failed senatorial campaign that caused the Lord to strike Coffin down. I hope that the next time I see the names of those alumni in the Yale Alumni Magazine, it is in the Necrology section.
